PAHANG - RAUB - LATA BEREMBUN
ONE OF THE WORLD OLDEST RAINFOREST
LATA BEREMBUN, SUNGAI KLAU, RAUB
Hidden deep in the forest of Raub, Lata Berembun is the perfect getaway located right in front of a waterfall with strong windy bliss. You might want to even consider bringing a jacket to this campsite for the night-time. We tried to keep things as simple as we could to save time during the trip. We only prepared a few tents (sharing), a cooking set, campfire-related equipment, and one backpack each (per person).
DAY 1
We departed as early as 6:00am having picked up our friends at 5:30am. There was a total 11 people with 2 cars, we carpooled and gathered at a meet-up point. We had our breakfast at Kampung Sg Klau's Yat Kee Hong Kong Duck Noodle and met up with our 4x4 service provider around 9am at Pasar Sungai Klau's Open Space Parking.
PS : 1 month pre-booking is required, peak seasons are always fully booked and they are trying to limit number of campers to protect nature.
Kampung Sungai Klau is 124km away from our departure place. You will pass by rubber, durian, and even cocoa estates along the way. The trip will take around 1 hour 56 minutes (excluding the 45 minutes of 10km 4x4WD off-road experience). To reach Lata Berembun - our main campsite, we had to take a special kind of 4x4WD to pass through the 10km of mud, dirt, and gravel off-road. This is due to the normal type of 4x4WD not being able to handle the road's condition.
After a thrilling 45 minutes, we finally reached the entrance of Lata Berembun Campsite. You can immediately hear the melodic sound of the waterfall once you reach the entrance. From there, you just need to take your items and walk for 5 minutes to reach your campsite.
Picture a tent set-up just in front of the waterfall, what a sight to see and not to mention an experience that you might not have at other getaways. At the campsite, you will see two gazebos (used for a kitchen & hammock hanging) and one toilet facility (without light).
There was a total of five tents set-up once we settled into our campsite. Some of us did not hang the flysheet while some did since the weather was free of any dark clouds. We grew hopeful that there will be no rain for the next two days.
After setting up our tents, we were ready to begin our hiking activity at Lata Berembun Tier 2 with our Hyper Gear Drybag, a set of fast-drying clothing, kampung Adidas and some titbits for lunch. You don't need to be a pro hiker for this! This one-hour hiking requires basic hiking skills and good muscle endurance with enough stamina only because the trail going up is steep. You will need to do some stretches before the hike or you will risk getting cramps when you dip yourself into the cold waterfall. Here at tier 2, the waterfall has a deep cooling pool area. You can dive in (but make sure safety comes first) and there is also a slope at the opposite side of pool (make sure you know how to swim because the waterfall's deep pool is always undercurrent).
We went back to our campsite for a BBQ dinner and some campfire fun, where we spent around 2.5 hours cooking and building the fire. Although, we took quite some time to build the fire due to the strong and cooling wind.
PS : We used the fallen tree logs and branches that we found on the ground for the campfire. Everyone should do the same instead of chopping off new trees.
DAY 2
The first day of the trip was wonderful, and we have depleted most of our energy on the same day as well. On the second day, we managed to wake up at 9:00am to have a simple breakfast, morning swimming at 1st tier waterfall's pool, and enjoyed the rest of our time there taking memorable photos. By 11:00am, we dismantled and cleaned-up the campsite before the 4x4WD service provider came at 12:00noon sharp. This standard timing is set by the service provider to reach the Kampung Klau Pasar Parking by 1:00pm and depart back to KL.
PS : To all campers, please remember to keep the campsite & environment clean for next group of campers. Do practice " Take only memories, leave only your footprint "
About Lata Berembun @ Kampung Sungai Klau Raub, Pahang
Lata Berembun, one of the pristine waterfalls hidden on the slopes of Benom Mountain and protected by the Forestry of Pahang. Located near a Chinese Village called Kampung Sungai Chalit in Raub, Pahang. Lata Berembun is 124km away from Kuala Lumpur with a 2-hour 30 minutes travel distance passing by rubber, durian and cocoa estates. It's famous for its chilly camping ground as the strong wind blows the waterfall mist all day long, just like a natural air-conditioner without an off button. To reach the campsite, campers are required to take up the local 4WD service provider as the 10km off-road is terribly destroyed from the illegal logging. You can also bring your 4WD if your 4WD is made for hardcore terrain.
